The Relationship Between Oral Health and the Brain

Research by Satoshi Yamaguchi from Tohoku University, Japan, found that poor oral health, particularly gum disease and tooth loss, can impact brain function. It was observed that the hippocampus shrinks in individuals with oral health issues, a characteristic often found in Alzheimer's patients.

Additionally, in 2020, another study by Dr. Angela Kamer from New York University demonstrated the correlation between imbalances in subgingival bacteria and certain biomarkers in saliva indicative of Alzheimer's disease in adults. These studies emphasize the importance of oral health care, as it directly affects brain function and strength.

Proper Oral Health Care

The aforementioned research serves as a warning, especially for working-age individuals, not to neglect oral health care to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease in the future. Proper oral hygiene practices include:

  • Brushing teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes each time.
  • Using dental floss daily to clean between teeth.
  • Regular dental check-ups and cleanings every 6 months.
  • Avoiding smoking, a major cause of gum disease.
  • Consuming a diet rich in nutrients beneficial for oral health, such as calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin C.

As evident from the aforementioned studies, maintaining good oral health not only ensures strong teeth and gums but also promotes overall body health, particularly brain health and memory. Therefore, regular oral health care practices are essential for preventing cognitive decline and memory loss in the long term.
